Why learn Wing Chun? After all there are so many different martial arts out there, why should you choose to learn Wing Chun and what can Wing Chun teach your child?
This week I was really honoured to be able to interview Sifu Jude Hudson of Kid’s Wing Chun Academey, I knew that there were many obvious benefits to learn Wing Chun, even though I did learn Wing Chun for just over a year, I knew it was something that giving my child an opportunity to learn Wing Chun would help teach him so many things.
In this interview I ask Sifu Jude Hudson on the benefits and why it’s important for a young child to learn Wing Chun – in this the first interview we did together we focus on the aspect of discpline and self discpline and how Wing Chun can teach both to a child and interestingly enough which is more important for a child to learn.
You can see that we covered a lot of ground in the short interview, I found it really interesting and reassuring that as well as teaching very good self defence tactics that when a child takes time to learn Wing Chun that they can build up their self discpline – to me this is just as important.
As parents we spend a lot of time trying to convince our children to do things that are in their own best interests.
I take the approach that helping them develop awareness of what’s in their own self interests that they can go much further than us constantly having to push them. I found it interesting that Sifu Jude Hudson made such a distinction like this in developing self-discpline versus discpline in general (i.e. following rules, listening to instructions), having done Wing Chun as an adult I know the importance of listening to the instructions that the teacher gives (i.e. discpline) but also the self discpline that comes along with knowing that I better practice the drills in my own time as literally anything can be thrown at you during a class.

My boy’s directorial debut
Also on a personal note there was something very special about this interview, that I thought I would indulge myself and share. I’ve done quite a few of these interviews for both this blog and my filmmaking blog (www.digitopiaFilm.com) but this one is the first one I took my boy along to film with me. We arrived some twenty minutes early and I taught him what all the camera and lighting equipment was, we set it up together and I let him set up the shot asking him to line up all the angles and introduced the concept of how best to light the shot.
I think doing things and involving your child in activities that you the parent enjoy doing is such a great way to really connect with your child – we had a real blast, I think it’s something I’ll encourage a lot more (whether he enjoys it or not). When he shouted ‘Action’ at the start and ‘Cut’ at the end it was a real golden parenting moment – made my heart just melt.
